Sports Funding

What is Primary PE and Sports Premium Funding?

The Government is providing an additional £150 million to schools each year to improve provision of Physical Education (PE) and sport in primary schools. This funding is provided jointly by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport. The funding is ring-fenced and therefore can only be spent on the provision of PE and sport in schools. Stillington Community Primary School uses its funding in various ways to improve the PE and sport provision across school.

Purpose of Funding

Schools must use the funding to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of Physical Education, School Sport and Physical Activity (PESSPA) they offer. This means that the Primary PE and sport premium should be used to:

  • Develop or add to the PESSPA activities that the school already offer
  • Build capacity and capability within the school to ensure that improvements made now will benefit pupils joining the school in future years

Possible uses for the funding might include:

  • Hiring specialist PE teachers or qualified sports coaches to work with primary teachers when teaching PE
  • Supporting and engaging the least active children through new and additional clubs
  • Paying for professional development opportunities for teachers in PE and sport
  • Providing cover to release primary teachers for professional development in PE and sport
  • Running sports competitions, or increasing pupils’ participation in the School Games
  • Buying quality assured professional development modules or materials for PE and sport
  • Providing places for pupils on after school sports clubs.
  • Pooling the additional funding with that of other local schools

Accountability

At Stillington School, leaders and those responsible for governance understand their respective roles and perform these in a way that enhances the effectiveness of the school by ensuring that the grant is used effectively and based on school need. Leaders regularly evaluate how the funding is being used in order to secure maximum, sustainable impact.

Schools are required to publish details of how they spend Primary PE and Sports funding, including any under-spend, as well as on the impact it has on pupils’ PE and sport participation and attainment. A final report is posted on the school website by the end of each academic year.
